PREFACE

The ever-increasing number of those who purchase archery equipment for the first time and the constantly recurring requests for information on both shooting technique and equipment have prompted the author to assemble this material in which is set forth in simple non-technical language the essentials which will serve as a guide to the beginner in the purchase of suitable equipment and will also provide instruction in shooting techniques and tips on hunting.

The ability to shoot well is acquired through strict self-discipline and compliance with approved shooting methods. The material in this book is intended to guide the beginner in acquiring good shooting form which will become a habit through repeated effort.

The immense progress in the development of the modern bow and the variety of materials used in its construction, its capabilities, the use for which it is intended, and wide variations in price make it necessary for the novice to use care in the selection of the initial equipment.

It is hoped that the information contained within these covers will keep the novice from acquiring equipment entirely un-suited to his purpose and from developing shooting habits which will prevent full enjoyment of the sport. Whether on the target range, the field course, or in the hunting field, the bow adds to the recreational possibilities of the outdoors for every member of the family.

I am indebted to my wife who has constantly rendered me indispensable aid in reading proof and whose valued suggestions have guided me in the preparation of the manuscript. To my many friends who have encouraged me to undertake this work I am extremely grateful. For careful scrutiny and suggestions on certain technical phases of the manuscript I am beholden to H. Ray Moffitt, Civil Engineer. For consultation and materials, credits should go to Roger M. Latham, Chief, Wildlife Research Division of the Pennsylvania Game Commission, Will Johns, Editor, Fermsylvanw Game News, and to Clayton B. Shenk, Executive Secretary, The Pennsylvania State Archery Association. For permission to use material which appeared in the Pennsylvania Game News I am indebted to the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Honorable mention is due the many conservation officials of the various states who supplied an abundance of information on bow-hunting opportunities in their respective states. With a final citation to the publisher, The Stackpole Company and staff member Charles K. Fox, my very good friend, whose cooperation and willingness to present the typographical and illustrative features in a manner evidenced in the professional appearance of the work is a source of particular satisfaction to me.
