When feeding your dog it's only a simple process of filling the food and water dishes and placing them back on the ground, right? Nothing complicated, because dogs dont require anything fancy. Many veterinarians don't agree with that statement. Even though there are a great many individuals who do feed their dogs this way, using an elevated feeder is much healthier for your dog for numerous reasons. It may not seem like an important distinction, but the health issues that can be simply resolved by an elevated dog feeder are numerous.
If you sit and consider it for a minute or two, the concept of eating and drinking with your neck and back bent seems very unpleasant and uncomfortable doesn't it? For senior dogs particularly, an elevated feeder is crucial to their health. Like all animals, humans included, older dogs typically eat smaller portions anyway. In addition, think about the discomfort of eating off of the floor and you'll realize that the potential that your pet isn't getting proper nutrition increases. Older dogs need to be as comfortable as possible to continue to be healthy and get the fuel they so desperately need. The same theory applies to senior dogs that have arthritis or other joint problems. A dog feeders is an a great technique to use to ensure the ideal nutrition of an older or feeble dog.
Lets consider overall sanitation for a second. Pet bowls that are placed on the ground soon turn into a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. The moisture from the water the dog loses when he raises his head to swallow collects underneath the dishes and makes the perfect condition for dangerous little pests to live. This isnt safe for the dog or the humans in the house. When dogs drink from an elevated feeder it isn't required of them to lift their heads in order to swallow and any water that does escape them tends to fall back into the bowl rather than onto the ground. An elevated feeder will definitely help to eliminate this likely health hazard to the entire household.
Another benefit to using an elevated feeder is gas. Go ahead and chuckle, there isnt one single pet owner alive who hasnt had to put up with their dogs occasional periods of noxious gas. If you need another reason to switch to a raised dog feeders this is it. An elevated feeder makes it so the dog can hold their head at a more natural angle while they eat. As a result, the dog gulps less, reducing air intake into the stomach and eliminating the gas. Without question your dog also feels a great deal better without the bloated feeling of constantly having gas - so it's really a win-win situation for the both of you.
But in all seriousness, eating directly from the ground is really unhealthy for for your dog. Some dogs are hindered by a condition called megaesophagus. This is a condition in which the muscles of the esophagus become loose and too large. Eating and drinking off of the ground forces the affected animal to work against gravity with faulty equipment. Since the esophagus is already weak to begin with, food will often collect there rather than moving on the stomach. An elevated feeder reduces the work the muscles have to do and aids gravity in getting the food to the stomach, where it needs to be.
There are plenty of different reasons to spoil and take care of your pet. The most important of those being the day you adopted him; you in essence made a promise to take care of him as best as you could. By providing him the proper materials to help ensure good health is just part of doing your job.
